Silence Con’t

Silence is underestimated. It contains much more than we normally think:

The space between the notes,

Is white,

Is blank.

Yet something is actually there…

A moment’s pause,

All sit and wait,

The motion suspended

In the air.

There is a lot that goes on when there is silence. During silence, we become reconciled with our emotions, and allow the spiritual to come in, if we are open to it. Those are the moments when beauty can enter, the beauty of art, of love, or of understanding. Emotions that are withheld can be suspended there until we know exactly the right way to release them.

Fugue Fun

My father can read a newspaper, listen to the TV and pay attention to a conversation, all at the same time. How he does this I do not know, but being a distinguished professor of mathematics, he does have an exceptional brain.

Fugues are good ways to practice paying attention to more than one thing at the same time. A theme is used, such as “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Three Blind Mice.” The first person starts, and then a second joins in with the same theme only several beats later. As the ear gets more advanced, one can try doing it in different pitches, speed and with more complex themes. While singing with a friend, try to understand how your brain is processing what is going on. Do you understand what each of you is saying or do you tune the other person out so that you don’t lose concentration? Are you listening to the timing and rhythm of the other person throughout the song, or do you just jump in at the right time, and then only pay attention to your own counting or sense of rhythm?

The stringing of the notes

One together holding onto the next.

Up and down

Or side across,

Joining in a harmony.

The hands of sound

Helping one another

To form unity unbroken.

Each one of utter importance,

Yet each one dispensable,

In its own time.

Writing assignment: Write a paragraph where two people are speaking at the same time. One conversation is going on in the first line and then the other is on the second line. Keep alternating lines. See if you can somehow integrate the two.

Music assignment: Try playing and writing an inverted fugue: when one note goes up, the other goes down. Then see if you can vary its timing and speed and still sound harmonious.

Pakistan

On the way to Chicago I left one of my Music Poetry books on the plane with a man from Albuquerque; he was on his way back to Pakistan for three months to visit his 100 grandchildren!!

I love to think that these words are traveling all over the world, hopefully enriching people’s lives with musical thoughts and contemplation. It has been announced in Paris and Africa and will be on its way to Italy and Abu Dhabi in the spring. I think perhaps I will keep going with this musical theme, collect all styles of music from around the world and explore music’s many forms and intricacies.

“The earth is musical if only one will listen.”

-unknown

Man dancing in his element,

Truly imitates the world,

And joins the ebb and flow

Innately anchored to life’s own

Music-tide.

Indian Happiness

Congratulations to Sandy and his new fiance of New Delhi, India! They will be married on Valentines Day, 2011. May you have great happiness and blessings, and music/poetry in your halls.

Please let us know – what kind of music do they play at a wedding in India?

My brother was also in India, Bombay I think, where he asked his girl-friend if she would get married on an elephant! She considered the matter, but they didn’t end up doing that because they wanted all the family in the States to be able to come.

The beating of the drums

Has a rhythm  to a dance

A dance that is the harmony

To the melody of life.

Why Publish?

I had written the collection of poetry about music, The Music Is Written, in 2003 and never thought about publishing it. It had just been for my on enrichment and reflection. All the poems sat in a folder untouched, but followed me around the country as I tried to figure out what direction my life was going in and where I would settle. It survived the coldest winter in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where I added the poem about fish appearing to listen to the flute I had carved at an Indian reservation in Ashville, North Carolina. This was the flute that inspired the poem Indian Flute – The River Of Tunnels and the one I played at the battlefield of Gettysburg in tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives there. The collection was also a manuscript that came south and was stranded in Jacksonville, Tennessee where I ran out of gas, and found I had left my wallet in Asheville. Then it accompanied me all the way to New Orleans, Louisiana and survived the massive devastating flood of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Chompin’ To The Beat was an attempt to find solace and renewal through nature’s own music after such tragedy, as was Summer Swamp and The City’s Hum on return to New Orleans.

However, I still was not inspired to publish it until I had one more brush with the thought of death. In 2008 I was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, which included two metastasized tumors in my liver, three on the spine and two in the brain. The doctors did not believe I would make it, and so I thought I should finally publish the book to leave something behind. I wanted it to be for others to grow in appreciation of the beautiful gift of music, and the time they have on this earth to enjoy it, as I have.

The poems explore four facets of music: 1) How it affects the musician and listeners. 2) How it is inter-related with nature and civilization. 3) How it affects our emotions. 4) How it originates from something profound and eternal.

Voice Of Africa

Africa is an amazing musical continent. I believe everyone is affected in some way by the beats and sounds that arise from there. In the town I live in, Santa Fe, New Mexico, people love to learn to drum and learn African dancing. There is something so grounding about their music’s tempo and movement. It connects us with our own internal rhythm – the heartbeat, pulse, aging and movement through time. A lot of original instruments and sounds are produced on the African continent. It ties us back to who we are and where we came from.

Voice of Africa

Sings out from the soul.

Passion soaked Griot singers,

Tell the land to its people.

What was on this earth before,

Show me the shores of your waters.

Billowing forth in mottled shades of ash,

Weather from volcanic muss

Or burning wars.

Freedom held between its fingers

The songs that spoke to all hearts

Beating like drums,

Pulsating like dances in the sun.
